Lighting with Speedlights: Pop-Up Portraits

Saturday March 9th, 9am-3pm • Hunt’s Photo, Melrose

Set up a great portrait anywhere using your flash!

Recommended Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of your camera, interest in portraits

Class Level: Beyond Basic

Instructors: Paul Nelson & Emily Hojnowski

Class Size: Maximum 12 attendees

What is a pop-up portrait? It’s a portrait that you create anywhere: You just setup up your flash and create a simple, beautiful portrait!
But is it that simple? Is there an easy way to create beautiful portraits on the spot in any location using your flash? Absolutely! Using your flash off the camera doesn’t need to be that difficult. With a little bit of know-how, you can create a little pop-up portrait anywhere and make it a beautifully sharp and well-lit portrait!
Our Pop-Up Portraits Session does just that by discussing, demonstrating, and then practicing with models how to set up a great portrait anywhere using the simplest of tools and methods. In this workshop, we will specifically be working with speedlights/flash off the camera using triggers.
Most importantly, attendees will be guiding the setup (and take down) of all the gear. Attendees are also encouraged to bring their own gear, but we will begin with gear that anyone can use, including:

-A Variety of brands of Speedlights
-Phottix & Pocket Wizard Triggers
-Sekonic Lightmeters
-Tethering capabilities for applicable cameras
-Westcott & Phottix Softboxes
-Rogue Flashbender products

What to bring:
-Camera with fully charged battery
-Memory cards
-For lenses, consider bringing lenses between 50mm and 100mm. Prime lenses with low apertures are a great option, but zoom lenses that fit this range will also work fine.
-You are welcome to bring your own speedlights and triggers, but we will begin the day using generic options.

Layout of the day:

9am- Introductions, brief presentation/discussion on exposure & speedlights, camera setup
10am- Demoing shooting
11am-2pm- Photographing with models. We will have about 3 hours in three setups.
2-3pm- Review of images & takeaways from the day
