We will discuss Exposure (how light works with the camera)\, the Big Three Settings (Aperture\, Shutter Speed\, & ISO)\, how they affect your picture and how to set them\, and what mode to set it to on your camera! We’ll discuss changing depth-of-field (controlling what’s in focus in the background)\, stopping or blurring the action in your scene\, and many other basic picture-taking techniques. SUMMARY:Hunt's Horror Lighting Portrait Workshop V: What We Shoot in the Shadows (with guest photographer Lindsey Ruth)
DESCRIPTION:It’s the scariest time of the year…again! No\, we’re not talking about tax season– It’s Halloween! Join us for our annual Horror Lighting Portrait Workshop! In this workshop\, we will create portraits utilizing a style of lighting reminiscent to that used in Horror films!\nIn this workshop\, we will begin by discussing the style of Horror Lighting\, using examples from the history of horror\, from classic 1930s Universal horror films to 1980s slasher to more modern\, experimental techniques. Instructor Paul Nelson has spent painstaking hours and buckets of popcorn to research the intricacies of horror\, and\, believe it or not\, it’s not all just “monster lighting”. We will photograph both inside and (if weather allows) outside to both recreate and create new in-the-style-of scenes to photograph. We will utilize both our Hunt’s Photo Melrose classrooms as well as locations in the surrounding area to great effect. We’ll discuss how to light and what to use\, create shadows and textures\, use studio space and real-life locations\, work with models and more!\nIn this workshop\, we will cover:\n• How to compose the lighting in a scene\, including how and when to use flash vs LED\n• Flash and LED lighting (important enough to write it on here twice)\n• Using lighting indoor or outside\n• Creating dynamic shadows and effects in your work with lighting\, as well as other light modification\n• How to work with (posing and directing) models to achieve a desired look\n• Developing a creative concept in portraits\, not only using lighting and posing\, but also costumes\, hair\, and make-up\nYou do not need to own a flash or lighting to attend this workshop. SUMMARY:An Intro to Creating Cyanotypes - A 2-Part Workshop- Hunt's Photo\, Melrose
DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Photo Education as we dive into a workshop that will quite literally bring you back to the days of film and hand-printing!\nCyanotypes are quite literally BLUE prints that can be simply made by placing a negative on top of a piece of coated paper (or other material) under UV light (or the sun) for a period of time. Once washed in water\, the resulting print produces a brilliant blue image on a white background. \nCyanotypes are also sometimes also referred to as sun prints\, as you can put semi-translucent items in front of the negatives/paper to create an ethereal look in your prints. We will demonstrate both processes during this workshop. \nThis is a 2-part workshop. In our first session\, we will discuss the process\, materials needed\, how to create a digital negative\, the cyanotype chemistry\, and other fun elements to include with your cyanotypes. We will spend the rest of the first session making cyanotypes–coating paper\,  adding semi-translucent items\, and printing images. For session 1\, we will use a set of pre-made digital negatives to give you a good idea of the type of images that work for cyanotypes. \nIn our second session\, we will continue coating and printing using your images. You are also welcome to bring in other materials you have brought from home\, if you choose. \nThis is a unique workshop that will emphasize creativity and process. \nA few items of note:\n• In this workshop\, we will be utilizing cyanotype chemistry\, consisting of ferric ammonium citrate (for light sensitivity) and potassium ferricyanide (for color). As described by the chemistry company Photographers Formulary\, “…[Potassium Ferricyanide] is not particularly toxic… [unless] placed in a strong acid solution; however\, strong acid is not used in the cyanotype process.”\n• Because we will be working with chemistry\, you must follow all instructions given regarding chemistry and personal protective equipment.\n• Because this chemistry can stain\, we will be taking precautions and wearing gloves. We strongly recommend bringing an apron\, one that you won’t mind if it changes colors.

DESCRIPTION:Join instructor Emily Hojnowski for a photo walk shooting live rugby action at Pine Banks Park in Melrose!  Thanks to with the Mystic River Rugby Club\, we have been given permission to bring a small group to photograph this fast-paced\, intense match-up!\nWe will meet at our store location at Hunt’s Photo in Melrose. The game starts at 11am across the street at Pine Banks Park and we will spend a few hours working on shooting action\, proper white balance\, panning action sequences\, auto-focus for action\, and subject development. Rugby is an exciting fast-paced sports full of excitement. We will capture the action!\n\nRecommended gear:  70-200\, 100-400 and long telephoto lenses. A Monopod could be helpful\, but is not essential. Fast memory cards! If you are concerned about standing for a few hours in one place\, a sitting stool could help.

SUMMARY:Hunt's Photo Walk: Moore State Park
DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Education for a walk at Moore State Park in Paxton\, Massachusetts. A historic gristmill\, waterfalls\, and over-flowering flower blooms are just a few of the sights in this large park in Massachusetts. This is a great walk for wide angle\, macro\, or even 50mm prime lenses. There are lots of opportunities for landscapes and macro\, with historic buildings\, lots of flowers\, and sometimes even sheep! The waterfalls also present an opportunity for long exposures\, in which case a tripod and ND filters or a CPL might not be a bad idea! Join us for a fun and stunning walk!

DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Photo Education as we explore Horn Pond’s 102-acre body of water along the Aberjona River in Woburn\, Massachusetts. On this walk\, we will emphasize landscape\, wildlife\, and macro photography! We will work on creative imagery\, utilizing the color of the season\, but also discuss black & white photography and techniques such as panning & zooming to create a dramatic and fine art effect. Photographers of all skill levels are encouraged to attend!\nHorn Pond is a wonderfully scenic area\, offering many outdoor activities such as hiking and bike riding. These same trails are an excellent place to explore many types of photographic opportunities\, emphasizing nature\, landscape\, and macro. On many of our walks\, the quality of day can positively or negatively affect how our images turn out. On this walk\, we will emphasize making the best out of any situation\, whether cloudy\, sunny or rainy (well\, not too rainy). Bring your creative thoughts!\nWe recommend having both a standard zoom lens and telephoto zoom lens\, preferably one that will go to 200mm or above.\nPlease note: There will be a good amount of walking on this Photo Walk. Nothing too treacherous\, but make sure to wear comfortable shoes!

DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Education for a walk at Benson Park in Hudson\, NH. Benson’s Wild Animal Farm was a private zoo and amusement park in Hudson. It opened to the public in 1926 and closed in 1987\, after having been renamed New England Playworld for its final year. The state of New Hampshire acquired the property in 1989 and transferred it to the town of Hudson in 2009. It has been redeveloped as a public park and nature area. Over 4 miles of trails\, wildlife\, and beautiful scenes of nature are just some examples of what to expect on this fun photo walk.

SUMMARY:Hunt's Portrait Workshop: Lighting on Location ft. Dia De Los Muertos
DESCRIPTION:Join photographer Henry Marte and Hunt’s Photo Education for a unique portrait workshop where we will demonstrate how to light a subject in any environment utilizing natural light and supplemental light (flash or LED). \nLighting on Location means that you’re lighting in a real-world environment and not just a studio. Our workshop will take place at the Western Ave Studios in Lowell\, which features unique indoor elements\, such as old stairways\, weathered brick\, and cracking cement\, and outdoor locations\, such as a garden\, railroad tracks. We will utilize the natural environment of our location to work into our portraits\, and then use lights to make it something spectacular. This workshop is a great opportunity for both beginner and intermediate photographers\, as we’ll build examples of where to place subjects\, when to use lighting\, and what lighting we think works best for that environment. (Lighting will be provided!) \nThe theme for this workshop is Dia De Los Muertos. Our models will be made up and dressed in the style shown in the photos above\, with make-up provided by @lisa_la_colorista! \nFor gear\, we will be using both Westcott (FJ200\, FJ400\, FJ800) strobes/flashes as well as Westcott diffusers as well as a mix of Nanlite and Aputure LED lights\, all of which are excellent brands for creating stunning portraits. \nThis workshop will be co-taught by Hunt’s Photo Educator Paul Nelson and professional photographer Henry Marte. Both have extensive portrait experience and will take you through the full process\, from naturally lighting a subject\, to how to properly expose while using lighting\, to how to actually use the lights themselves! \nPhotographers of all skill levels are encouraged to attend. \nAbout Henry Marte\nHenry is a published photographer and credited filmmaker. He specializes in various forms of photography\, including portrait\, events\, headshots\, drone\, and commercial photography. Other than attending MassArt’s Documentary Film School\, he is almost entirely self taught. He runs a small media production studio called Marte Media\, based out of Western Avenue Studios in Lowell. Some of his clients include Spartan Race\, UMass Lowell\, Phillips Academy\, Navigation Brewing Company\, and more. Originally from NYC\, he now calls Lowell\, Massachusetts his home. He enjoys New York style pizza\, walks with a camera\, and hiking to active volcanoes.
