DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Photo Education and Westcott lighting representative JC Carey for another entry in our series of portrait workshops where we will be creating dynamic lighting scenarios involving athletes\, both posed and in motion! Attendees will learn about how to create amazing portraits using a mixture of natural light and flash\, understand subject placement\, when and why to use strobes (and where to place them)\, and will end up with some excellent portfolio-building images! \nThis workshop will be co-taught with Hunt’s Photo Education’s Paul Nelson and Westcott lighting representative JC Carey.  We will use Westcott strobes and have a series of student/athlete-models available for the shoot. \nJoin us for a fun and dynamic workshop! \nJoseph “JC” Carey is a lifetime image maker that like so many photographers was terrified of lighting until he was gifted with a lighting class in 2007. The class wasn’t very good\, but it lit a fire. That gift changed everything. It transformed him from someone that barely took pictures of people and knew nothing about lighting into someone still trying to figure out how to light everything.

These classes are designed to provide you time\, opportunity\, and guidance in shaping your creative photographic voice. We will give an overview on a specific topic in an online class session\, then give you time to go into the field by yourself (or with someone else\, if you choose) to complete an assignment based on that topic. We will reconvene a few days later for an online image review to discuss elements of your images.\nThe Personal Vision Series is a crossroads of many different ideas that we offer with Hunt’s Photo Education: Topic-based instruction/classes\, Photo Walks\, & Image Reviews. However\, unlike a Photo Walk where we will all take a certain direction\, for the “Walk” portion\, you will be asked to journey out on your own to photograph. This will cause you to be the driving force of your creativity and vision!\nThis month’s topic is “Inspired by Edward Hopper”. We will have an instructional online presentation on the first date and will reconvene for our Image Review on the second date. You will have that time period in between to photograph and edit our assignment. Your personal creative voice is critical to your growth as a photographer and as an artist. The town is an eclectic mix of unique storefronts\, a beautiful harbor\, boats\, and a rich fishing tradition that offers a wide variety of photographic subjects.\nThis walk is an excellent opportunity both for those just starting out as well as the well-seasoned photographer. For those starting out\, there are many excellent opportunities to work on composition and subject development\, and also see how the light changes and affects your photographs throughout the evening. For the well-seasoned photographer\, Rockport has just so much of interest to offer that you can work on creating more complex compositions and other advanced themes in your work. This is truly one of the best places at any level to photograph.

DESCRIPTION:Join instructor Don Toothaker for a special photo walk in Haverhill\, MA where we will concentrate on being able to see and photograph in Black & White. During the walk\, we will also discuss elements that contribute to become more adept at both Black and White and night photography\, including exposure\, focusing\, composition and much more! Photographers of all skill levels are welcome!\nHaverhill\, Massachusetts was once known as the “Queen Slipper City” for its high percentage of shoes produced in the town. The town retains the look of a manufacturing town\, and this look translates extremely well to the look of Black & White photography. On this walk\, we will move about the downtown area and along the Merrimack River at dusk and into the night. Our task will be to focus our energies into how to effectively see and create images in Black & White.

SUMMARY:Hunt's Photo Workshop: Olde Sturbridge Village in Black & White
DESCRIPTION:Located an hour west of Boston\, Sturbridge Village is a proud replication of an 18th century New England town. Sturbridge Village is a living history museum that features many authentic period buildings and homes to explore and enjoy. The village is also inhabited by re-enactors who provide colorful insight to life in New England during the 18th century. Sturbridge Village is a wonderful destination for a multitude of photographic opportunities as well as a glimpse into a bygone era.\nOlde Sturbridge Village is perhaps one of the best places to have both a Photo Walk and a class. There’s a little bit of everything at this living history museum\, from macro and closeup with fine details to architecture\, from portraits to landscapes. We will photograph both indoors and outdoors\, in regular light as well as very low light. We will discuss how to work with subjects to create a story\, and also work on settings to fine-tune focus and exposure! This Photo Walk is one of the best opportunities to build your photographic knowledge\, no matter what level. This walk is equally as beneficial as a first walk or a twentieth walk\, as the area has so much to offer!\nAfter the workshop\, attendees will have the opportunity to review their images and make some edits. We will then reconvene online with an image review where we will discuss many of the factors that we discussed on the walk portion of the workshop. SUMMARY:Hunt's Photo Walk: Lowell Bridges and Waterways
DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Photo Education for a walk in downtown Lowell\, Massachusetts. On this walk\, we will work on architectural photography\, Image composition\, Black and White Photography\, and other ways of creating images expressively.\nThe city of Lowell is a wonderful example of an old New England mill town. A city that was once dominant in the textile industry\, Lowell’s population boomed during much of the 19th century\, peaking in the early 20th century. Lowell\, nicknamed “Mill City”\, still retains much of its’ early 20th century look (and charm)\, with many old mills being converted to apartments\, artist spaces\, shops and more. On this walk\, we will photograph around many of the mill areas and along the beautiful Merrimack River with the many bridges and cobblestone walkways. \nThis will also be an excellent opportunity to use Neutral Density filters to obtain wonderful effects! \nPhotographers of all skill levels are welcome.

DESCRIPTION:Learning about photography can be a real challenge. There are so many pieces to the puzzle of photography\, some of which use confusing terminology. And while we also offer other wonderful Beginner Photography classes to get you started\, nothing is truly the same as hands-on in-the-field! It’s important to fully understand the “why” and “how” of your camera settings.\nIn this outdoor\, hands-on class\, you’ll learn all about the basics of photography. We will discuss Exposure (how light works with the camera)\, the Big Three Settings (Aperture\, Shutter Speed\, & ISO)\, how they affect your picture and how to set them\, and what mode to set it to on your camera! We’ll discuss changing depth-of-field (controlling what?s in focus in the background)\, stopping or blurring the action in your scene\, and many other basic picture-taking techniques. This will be an excellent opportunity to learn about your camera in a fun and safe environment! Join us to strengthen your photographic knowledge!\nIn this session of Beginner Photography in the Field…\n…we will be going to the Roger Williams Park in Providence. The Roger Williams Park is a massive area of greenery and beauty in Providence with a Rose Garden\, Japanese Garden\, beautifully constructed buildings\, such as the gazebo\, peaceful waterways\, quaint bridges\, and so much more! There is so much to photograph there and a wonderful variety of subject matter\, including textures\, angles\, and compositions that can lead to some truly excellent photographs. DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Photo Educator Paul Nelson and portrait and sports photographer Henry Marte for another entry in our series of portrait workshops where we will be creating dynamic lighting scenarios involving athletes\, both posed and in motion! Attendees will learn about how to create amazing portraits using a mixture of natural light and flash\, understand subject placement\, when and why to use strobes (and where to place them)\, and will end up with some excellent portfolio-building images! \nIn this workshop\, we will begin by developing dynamic lighting setups with natural light and flash. Attendees will begin to develop an understanding of how lighting outdoors can positively affect sports portraits. During the second half of the workshop\, we will take it a step further by adding in movement and action\, a unique and fun look in our end result!   We will use Westcott strobes and have a series of athlete-models available for the shoot. \nThis workshop will be co-taught by Hunt’s Photo Educator Paul Nelson and professional photographer Henry Marte. Both have extensive portrait experience and will take you through the full process of lighting a subject\, how to properly expose while using strobes\, and how to actually use the strobes themselves!\nPhotographers of all skill levels are encouraged to attend. \nAbout Henry Marte\nHenry is a published photographer and credited filmmaker. He specializes in various forms of photography\, including portrait\, events\, headshots\, drone\, and commercial photography. Other than attending MassArt’s Documentary Film School\, he is almost entirely self taught. He runs a small media production studio called Marte Media\, based out of Western Avenue Studios in Lowell. Some of his clients include Spartan Race\, UMass Lowell\, Phillips Academy\, Navigation Brewing Company\, and more. Originally from NYC\, he now calls Lowell\, Massachusetts his home. He enjoys New York style pizza\, walks with a camera\, and hiking to active volcanoes.

We will give an overview on a specific topic in an online class session\, then give you time to go into the field by yourself (or with someone else\, if you choose) to complete an assignment based on that topic. We will reconvene a few days later for an online image review to discuss elements of your images.\nThe Personal Vision Series is a crossroads of many different ideas that we offer with Hunt’s Photo Education: Topic-based instruction/classes\, Photo Walks\, & Image Reviews. However\, unlike a Photo Walk where we will all take a certain direction\, for the “Walk” portion\, you will be asked to journey out on your own to photograph. This will cause you to be the driving force of your creativity and vision!\nThis month’s topic is “Abstract Thinking”. We will have an instructional online presentation on the first date and will reconvene for our Image Review on the second date. Today\, the Deerfield Fair consists of over 100 acres with attendance in excess of 100\,000 visitors over the four-day event. From animals and crafts to rides and people\, there is always something to see and photograph at the Fair!\nFor our morning\, you will be given an assignment to build a “photo story” of the Deerfield Fair. SUMMARY:Hunt's Photo Filter Workshop: Using Filters in the Field with Waterfalls
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a morning of learning what filters we want to use in photography\, how to use them\, and then go out into the field to get some hands-on practice!\nWe will begin in our Hunt’s Photo Manchester classroom to learn about filters\, how to use them properly\, how to attach them to the camera\, and\, if applicable\, purchase filters. We will then travel a short distance to a NEW location (about 20-25 minutes away) to our waterfall location to practice long exposures. (Please note: Our location is TBA. To minimize confusion\, we will let you know in the reminder email a few days prior to the event.)  UV\, Circular Polarizer (CPL)\, and Neutral Density (ND) filters are all recommended. Students may choose to shoot from the banks of the river\, but the best shots will happen by walking along some rocks. Waterproof boots are your friend!\nWhether you’ve used filters and still have questions\, you’ve never used filters\, or you need a little inspiration\, this is a great opportunity to have some fun with filters!

DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Photo Education for a Personal Vision Shootout at the Topsfield Fair. This walk is geared toward intermediate and advanced photographers. During the walk\, we will “strengthen your photographic muscles” by challenging you to work outside of your comfort zone while also developing cohesion in the photographic work you produce. \nThe Topsfield Fair is one of America’s oldest agricultural fairs\, dating back to the early 1800s when the fair consisted of a showing of livestock and agricultural equipment. It now has become an New England institution\, bringing in nearly half a million visitors every year over the 11-day run. \nDuring our time here\, we will tell the story of the Topsfield Fair as each person sees it. Through independent work\, photographers will develop individual concepts and look at what catches their eye and imagination. Each photographer will create images to go along with those concepts and tell the story of the Topsfield Fair as each person sees\, hears\, smells\, and feels it. The end result of this shootout will be a “photo story” of the Topsfield Fair.

Instructor Paul Nelson has spent painstaking hours and buckets of popcorn to research the intricacies of horror\, and\, believe it or not\, it’s not all just “monster lighting”. We will then photograph both inside and (if weather allows) outside to both recreate and create new in-the-style-of scenes to photograph. We will utilize both our Hunt’s Photo Melrose classrooms as well as locations in the surrounding area to great effect. We’ll discuss how to light and what to use\, create shadows and textures\, use studio space and real-life locations\, work with models and more!\nIn this workshop\, we will cover:\n• How to compose the lighting in a scene\, including how and when to use flash vs LED\n• Flash and LED lighting (important enough to write it on here twice)\n• Using lighting indoor or outside\n• Creating dynamic shadows and effects in your work with lighting\, as well as other light modification\n• How to work with (posing and directing) models to achieve a desired look\n• Developing a creative concept in portraits\, not only using lighting and posing\, but also costumes\, hair\, and make-up\nYou do not need to own a flash or lighting to attend this workshop. SUMMARY:Hunt's Photo Walk: Salem\, Mass in the Evening
DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Photo Education as we explore and photograph historic downtown Salem\, MA. On this walk we will discuss settings and techniques for long exposures\, architectural photography\, subject development\, black and white photography\, and composition. \nThe city of Salem is synonymous with the Salem Witch Trials of the late-1600s\, and although the trials took place outside what is now commonly known as Salem\, the city has adopted them as part of its identity. Many of the city’s cobblestone walks\, 17th-19th century houses & architecture\, and cemeteries have been maintained\, reflecting Salem’s identity as a haunted community. \nOur route will take us down many of these streets in the downtown area\, then head to the Friendship at the harbor\, and finally continue to the downtown area again for fantastic low light and night photography opportunities! Photographers of all skill levels are encouraged to attend!
