DESCRIPTION:Introduction on Comparing Papers- Wednesday March 4th\, 6:30pm ET • Online! \nPrint Review- Wednesday March 11th\, 6:30pm ET • Hunt’s Melrose or Online! \nThe printed image shows our successes and our faults at a much higher level of detail than the digital image. To become better photographers\, it helps to understand this by creating the printed image as a final product. \nThis Month’s Printed Vision Session: Printing Flowers! \nEveryone wants to print flowers. There is such a mass appeal of flowers for such obvious reasons\, including their impermanence and their vibrancy of color. Therefore\, it only makes sense that flowers should be printed to display that level of vibrance for a long period of time! In this session\, we will focus our energies on not only the editing process\, but choosing the right surface of paper and size of paper. Among the topics discussed matte vs. glossy papers\, the importance of textured papers\, the illusive rice papers and natural/eco-friendly papers\, printing with borders and considering creating alternative borders\, and more! We will really be digging deep to think about what we are doing\, why we’re doing it\, and what we want to do! \nThis Print Review topic will meet for two sessions. In the first session\, we will discuss the topic– some of the key differences between paper surfaces– and present a variety of options for you to have your image printed. In between sessions 1 and 2\, attendees will independently process 1-2 images and submit them to the instructor for printing. Educator Paul Nelson will produce a recorded image review\, discussing paper options\, editing suggestions\, and more\, to be sent back to you leading up to the second session. Paul will then print images for the class. In the end\, you will receive a print of one of your edited images up to 13×19″ in size. (Please note: We are happy to make a larger or additional print outside of the class for an additional fee!) \nJoin us for an informative Printed Review class! \nA Note About The Printed Review Series \nOur Print Review Monthly is a chance to continue the print conversation over the course of many months. SUMMARY:Online: Special Guest Series- Hollywood Lighting in the Style of George Hurrell with Bobbi Lane
DESCRIPTION:George Hurrell was the greatest Hollywood Glamour photographer\, establishing the style in the early 30’s by photographing publicity images of the movie stars for MGM. Hurrell sculpted with light\, chiseling the subject’s features with bright highlights and deep shadows that created mystery and depth. He used large focusing fresnels (pronounced “fre-nel”)\, the same ones the movie studios still use today and photographed the major stars in Hollywood: Bogart\, Crawford (his favorite model)\,  Davis\, Deitrich\, Harlow\, “Bojangles”\, Gable\, Cooper\, Garbo\, Hepburn\, Tracy\, and more! From 1980 until 1992\, Hurrell rented Bobbi Lane’s studio in Los Angeles\, bringing in lighting along with furniture and props\, continuing to photograph the biggest stars of the day- Harrison Ford\, Arnold Schwarzenegger\, Diana Ross\, Queen\, the Talking Heads\, Liam Neeson\, Johnny Mathis\, Paul McCartney and many more. \nThis online seminar will cover Hurrell’s history and background as a painter and how he developed into a photographer. Bobbi will examine his techniques in lighting as well as his completing his concept of his subjects. Hurrell’s attention to detail was superb\, and she will show images he made during the time he photographed in Bobbi’s LA studio. \nCome learn this beautiful and fascinating style from one of the few that worked with the photographic master George Hurrell! \n  \n  \nAbout Bobbi Lane and Lee Varis \nBobbi Lane and Lee Varis\, accomplished photographers and educators with over 90 years of combined experience\, are excited to share their expertise in their workshops and presentations. Bobbi\, known as the “Mistress of Light\,” is celebrated for her creative portraiture and has been recognized by Photo District News as one of the top workshop instructors. Her passion for teaching and mastery of lighting techniques makes her a sought-after mentor. Lee\, the “Sultan of Skin\,” is a renowned photo-illustrator whose work includes iconic movie posters such as Silence of the Lambs and Star Trek. With his deep knowledge of digital imaging and creative photo illustration\, he inspires photographers to push their artistic boundaries. SUMMARY:Creating Cyanotypes Workshop- Hunt's Photo\, Waltham
DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Photo Education as we dive into a workshop that will quite literally bring you back to the days of film and hand-printing!\nCyanotypes are quite literally BLUE prints that can be simply made by placing a negative on top of a piece of coated paper (or other material) under UV light (or the sun) for a period of time. Once washed in water\, the resulting print produces a brilliant blue image on a white background.\nWe will begin this workshop with a prerecorded session where we will discuss the process\, materials needed\, and the preparation to be working with the cyanotype chemistry (see notes below). We will also discuss how to create a digital negative. For this workshop\, we will be creating our own digital negatives from an inkjet printer\, so you don’t actually need a negative and you don’t need a printer\, as we will be printing them in the store. Finally\, we will also discuss what to print on. Because we will have the ability to coat a material\, be it paper or fabric\, you can use a variety of printing surfaces\, which will elaborate on.\nPlease note: This session will be recorded\, so if you’re signing up last minute\, you can still watch it!\nDuring the workshop\, we will dive into all these elements. We will go through the process of coating (and drying) papers and fabrics\, creating test and final prints\, and discussing additional elements to change the look of our final prints. This is a unique workshop that will emphasize creativity and process.\nA few items of note:\n• In this workshop\, we will be utilizing cyanotype chemistry\, consisting of ferric ammonium citrate (for light sensitivity) and potassium ferricyanide (for color). As described by the chemistry company Photographers Formulary\, “…[Potassium Ferricyanide] is not particularly toxic… [unless] placed in a strong acid solution; however\, strong acid is not used in the cyanotype process.”\n• Because we will be working with chemistry\, you must follow all instructions given regarding chemistry and personal protective equipment.\n• Because this chemistry can stain\, we will be taking precautions and wearing gloves. We strongly recommend bringing an apron\, one that you won’t mind if it changes colors.

In the summer of 2021\, Jonathan collaborated with renowned photographer Mary Beth Meehan to produce Witness\, an exhibition that explores the life and times of his late grandmother\, Annye Raye Pitts. In December 2022\, his was one of five portraits selected for the City of Providence’s “Who We Are Now?” public art banner project.\nA Yale graduate\, Jonathan is the Creative Director at Curiosity Store in Jamestown\, Rhode Island and has\, since 2010\, been the Artistic Director of Pawtucket\, RI’s Mixed Magic Theatre. Jonathan is married to Mixed Magic’s music director\, Kim Morrison Pitts-Wiley. SUMMARY:Hunt's Portrait Workshop: Dragging the Shutter and Other Creative Lighting Portrait Effects- Hunt's Photo\, Melrose
DESCRIPTION:Educators Paul Nelson and Henry Marte lead this fun and challenging workshop that delves into dragging the shutter\, motion\, and other creative lighting effects for portraits! Dragging the Shutter is a technique used where we keep the shutter of the camera open for longer in order to create a sense of movement. It is achieved using a combination of lighting tools and can create a myriad of effects where every photo is a unique creation! We will also work on other fun creative lighting techniques and tools\, including projection mounts\, fresnels\, gobos\, and adding artificial smoke to create depth.\nYou do not need to have any prior knowledge of how to achieve these effects. \nWe will specifically be using Nanlite and Aputure LED lights and Westcott strobes\, but the concepts can apply to any lights you own. \nThis will be a fun day of portraits and not to be missed! \nAbout Henry Marte\nHenry is a published photographer and credited filmmaker. He specializes in various forms of photography\, including portrait\, events\, headshots\, drone\, and commercial photography. Other than attending MassArt’s Documentary Film School\, he is almost entirely self taught. He runs a small media production studio called Marte Media\, based out of Western Avenue Studios in Lowell. Some of his clients include Spartan Race\, UMass Lowell\, Phillips Academy\, Navigation Brewing Company\, and more. Originally from NYC\, he now calls Lowell\, Massachusetts his home. He enjoys New York style pizza\, walks with a camera\, and hiking to active volcanoes.
