And while we also offer other wonderful Beginner Photography classes to get you started\, nothing is truly the same as hands-on in-the-field! It’s important to fully understand the “why” and “how” of your camera settings.\nIn this outdoor\, hands-on class\, you’ll learn all about the basics of photography. We will discuss Exposure (how light works with the camera)\, the Big Three Settings (Aperture\, Shutter Speed\, & ISO)\, how they affect your picture and how to set them\, and what mode to set it to on your camera! We’ll discuss changing depth-of-field (controlling what’s in focus in the background)\, stopping or blurring the action in your scene\, and many other basic picture-taking techniques. This will be an excellent opportunity to learn about your camera in a fun and safe environment! Join us to strengthen your photographic knowledge!\nIn this session of Beginner Photography in the Field…\n…we will be going to the Roger Williams Park in Providence. The Roger Williams Park is a massive area of greenery and beauty in Providence with a Rose Garden\, Japanese Garden\, beautifully constructed buildings\, such as the gazebo\, peaceful waterways\, quaint bridges\, and so much more! There is so much to photograph there and a wonderful variety of subject matter\, including textures\, angles\, and compositions that can lead to some truly excellent photographs. It’s the perfect place to learn about photography! Bring your camera and your enthusiasm to learn all about photography in a hands-on\, real-life environment!

SUMMARY:Hunt's Horror Lighting Portrait Workshop V: What We Shoot in the Shadows (with guest photographer Lindsey Ruth)
DESCRIPTION:It’s the scariest time of the year…again! No\, we’re not talking about tax season– It’s Halloween! Join us for our annual Horror Lighting Portrait Workshop! In this workshop\, we will create portraits utilizing a style of lighting reminiscent to that used in Horror films!\nIn this workshop\, we will begin by discussing the style of Horror Lighting\, using examples from the history of horror\, from classic 1930s Universal horror films to 1980s slasher to more modern\, experimental techniques. Instructor Paul Nelson has spent painstaking hours and buckets of popcorn to research the intricacies of horror\, and\, believe it or not\, it’s not all just “monster lighting”. We will photograph both inside and (if weather allows) outside to both recreate and create new in-the-style-of scenes to photograph. We will utilize both our Hunt’s Photo Melrose classrooms as well as locations in the surrounding area to great effect. We’ll discuss how to light and what to use\, create shadows and textures\, use studio space and real-life locations\, work with models and more!\nIn this workshop\, we will cover:\n• How to compose the lighting in a scene\, including how and when to use flash vs LED\n• Flash and LED lighting (important enough to write it on here twice)\n• Using lighting indoor or outside\n• Creating dynamic shadows and effects in your work with lighting\, as well as other light modification\n• How to work with (posing and directing) models to achieve a desired look\n• Developing a creative concept in portraits\, not only using lighting and posing\, but also costumes\, hair\, and make-up\nYou do not need to own a flash or lighting to attend this workshop. DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event is taken by the Wakefield Rec Department at this Link!\nWednesdays September 30th\, October 7th\, 14th\, 21st\, 28th & November 4th\, 4:30-6pm • Hunt’s Photo\, Melrose \nJoin Hunt’s Photo Education for a 6-session photography program aimed at strengthening their photographic skills while also learning a bit about how to take the best portraits.\n\nOver the course of the sessions\, we will cover a wide range of topics\, including portrait composition\, posing\, direction and interaction with the subject\, lighting (indoors and outside)\, editing and more! In every session we’ll have a brief introduction to a topic followed by a fun practical exercise. Our goal is to get your photographers taking pictures as much as possible! At the end of each session\, we’ll look back on the images to see what we liked about them.\nAs this is a class about portraits\, all attendees should be ready to have their picture taken! The best way to learn about how to pose and direct your subject is to be a subject yourself\, and that’s what these sessions aim to do. In the end\, attendees should have a better understanding of what makes a successful portrait\, how to execute it\, and also have some great shots of themselves! \nPrerequisites: \n–Attendees should have a little bit of experience with their cameras. They do not need to be experts\, but this shouldn’t be the first time using their camera. We also offer our Intro to Photography program if you are just starting out. \n-This course is geared towards students aged 11-16 years old. DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Photo Education for our Multi-Session Series. In our Multi-Session Series\, we will meet over the course of a number of weeks\, generally at the same time each week. During that time\, we will discuss a specific element of a topic and end the session by giving a photographic assignment. That assignment will be due for completion before the next class meeting\, and we will review those images at the start of the next session. If for some reason you cannot attend one of the sessions\, don’t worry! They will be recorded and you will be able to watch them at your leisure!\nOur Multi-Session Series is designed to “keep the conversation going” by engaging with our attendees in a more personal way. In each of these classes\, we will have 10-15 attendees and provide direct feedback on images. We encourage photographers of all skill levels to consider these classes\, as they will build upon your experience and provide an excellent chance to work on your imagery!\nLandscape Photography\nLandscape photography is one of the most easily accessible genres of photography and is enjoyed by many. What does it take to create a landscape image that stands out? Join Hunt’s Photo Education as we go beyond “F8 and be there” and dive deep into the technical\, artistic\, and practical aspects of landscape photography.\nIn week one\, we’ll cover what it takes to plan and the settings necessary for your best shots. We’ll also talk about the gear all landscape photographers should have in their bags and what to do when the weather just won’t cooperate. In week two\, we’ll edit landscape images from start to finish using Adobe Lightroom Classic. By week three\, we’ll discuss composition\, dynamic range\, depth of field\, and focus. We’ll also discuss when to shoot in color and when to shoot in black and white. In our last week\, we’ll cover shooting and editing HDR images and panorama images in Adobe Lightroom Classic. We’ll also cover shooting landscapes at night as well as astrolandscapes. Each week\, Emily will give an assignment to hone your new skills and each student will receive individualized critiques. SUMMARY:An Intro to Creating Cyanotypes - A 2-Part Workshop- Hunt's Photo\, Melrose
DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Photo Education as we dive into a workshop that will quite literally bring you back to the days of film and hand-printing!\nCyanotypes are quite literally BLUE prints that can be simply made by placing a negative on top of a piece of coated paper (or other material) under UV light (or the sun) for a period of time. Once washed in water\, the resulting print produces a brilliant blue image on a white background. \nCyanotypes are also sometimes also referred to as sun prints\, as you can put semi-translucent items in front of the negatives/paper to create an ethereal look in your prints. We will demonstrate both processes during this workshop. \nThis is a 2-part workshop. In our first session\, we will discuss the process\, materials needed\, how to create a digital negative\, the cyanotype chemistry\, and other fun elements to include with your cyanotypes. We will spend the rest of the first session making cyanotypes–coating paper\,  adding semi-translucent items\, and printing images. For session 1\, we will use a set of pre-made digital negatives to give you a good idea of the type of images that work for cyanotypes. \nIn our second session\, we will continue coating and printing using your images. You are also welcome to bring in other materials you have brought from home\, if you choose. \nThis is a unique workshop that will emphasize creativity and process. \nA few items of note:\n• In this workshop\, we will be utilizing cyanotype chemistry\, consisting of ferric ammonium citrate (for light sensitivity) and potassium ferricyanide (for color). As described by the chemistry company Photographers Formulary\, “…[Potassium Ferricyanide] is not particularly toxic… [unless] placed in a strong acid solution; however\, strong acid is not used in the cyanotype process.”\n• Because we will be working with chemistry\, you must follow all instructions given regarding chemistry and personal protective equipment.\n• Because this chemistry can stain\, we will be taking precautions and wearing gloves. We strongly recommend bringing an apron\, one that you won’t mind if it changes colors.

DESCRIPTION:Join instructor Emily Hojnowski for a photo walk shooting live rugby action at Pine Banks Park in Melrose!  Thanks to with the Mystic River Rugby Club\, we have been given permission to bring a small group to photograph this fast-paced\, intense match-up!\nWe will meet at our store location at Hunt’s Photo in Melrose. The game starts at 11am across the street at Pine Banks Park and we will spend a few hours working on shooting action\, proper white balance\, panning action sequences\, auto-focus for action\, and subject development. Rugby is an exciting fast-paced sports full of excitement. We will capture the action!\n\nRecommended gear:  70-200\, 100-400 and long telephoto lenses. A Monopod could be helpful\, but is not essential. Fast memory cards! If you are concerned about standing for a few hours in one place\, a sitting stool could help.

I was really impressed with the whole experience. Great instructors!!?\n?Everything was condensed and taught at a basic level which helped with the confusion I had before coming to class. Bottom Line: Great class for confused beginners.?\n?Everything about this class was excellent. The instructors were patient and took time to answer every question thoroughly and we were given ample time to try out the techniques we were being shown. All in all\, a wonderful experience.?\n?Very much liked the instructors- knowledgeable\, entertaining\, encouraging\, not judgmental. Loved the casual nature of the class and opportunity for one-on-one discussions. Excellent for me\, as a novice.?

In every session we’ll have a brief introduction to a topic followed by a fun practical exercise. Our goal is to get your photographers taking pictures as much as possible! At the end of each session\, we’ll look back on the images to see what we liked about them.\nAs this is a class about portraits\, all attendees should be ready to have their picture taken! The best way to learn about how to pose and direct your subject is to be a subject yourself\, and that’s what these sessions aim to do. In the end\, attendees should have a better understanding of what makes a successful portrait\, how to execute it\, and also have some great shots of themselves! \nPrerequisites: \n–Attendees should have a little bit of experience with their cameras. DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Photo Education for our Multi-Session Series. In our Multi-Session Series\, we will meet over the course of a number of weeks\, generally at the same time each week. During that time\, we will discuss a specific element of a topic and end the session by giving a photographic assignment. That assignment will be due for completion before the next class meeting\, and we will review those images at the start of the next session. If for some reason you cannot attend one of the sessions\, don’t worry! They will be recorded and you will be able to watch them at your leisure!\nOur Multi-Session Series is designed to “keep the conversation going” by engaging with our attendees in a more personal way. In each of these classes\, we will have 10-15 attendees and provide direct feedback on images. We encourage photographers of all skill levels to consider these classes\, as they will build upon your experience and provide an excellent chance to work on your imagery!\nLandscape Photography\nLandscape photography is one of the most easily accessible genres of photography and is enjoyed by many. What does it take to create a landscape image that stands out? Join Hunt’s Photo Education as we go beyond “F8 and be there” and dive deep into the technical\, artistic\, and practical aspects of landscape photography.\nIn week one\, we’ll cover what it takes to plan and the settings necessary for your best shots. We’ll also talk about the gear all landscape photographers should have in their bags and what to do when the weather just won’t cooperate. In week two\, we’ll edit landscape images from start to finish using Adobe Lightroom Classic. By week three\, we’ll discuss composition\, dynamic range\, depth of field\, and focus. We’ll also discuss when to shoot in color and when to shoot in black and white. In our last week\, we’ll cover shooting and editing HDR images and panorama images in Adobe Lightroom Classic. We’ll also cover shooting landscapes at night as well as astrolandscapes. Each week\, Emily will give an assignment to hone your new skills and each student will receive individualized critiques. DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Education for a walk at Moore State Park in Paxton\, Massachusetts. A historic gristmill\, waterfalls\, and over-flowering flower blooms are just a few of the sights in this large park in Massachusetts. This is a great walk for wide angle\, macro\, or even 50mm prime lenses. There are lots of opportunities for landscapes and macro\, with historic buildings\, lots of flowers\, and sometimes even sheep! The waterfalls also present an opportunity for long exposures\, in which case a tripod and ND filters or a CPL might not be a bad idea! Join us for a fun and stunning walk!

On this walk\, we will emphasize landscape\, wildlife\, and macro photography! We will work on creative imagery\, utilizing the color of the season\, but also discuss black & white photography and techniques such as panning & zooming to create a dramatic and fine art effect. Photographers of all skill levels are encouraged to attend!\nHorn Pond is a wonderfully scenic area\, offering many outdoor activities such as hiking and bike riding. These same trails are an excellent place to explore many types of photographic opportunities\, emphasizing nature\, landscape\, and macro. On many of our walks\, the quality of day can positively or negatively affect how our images turn out. On this walk\, we will emphasize making the best out of any situation\, whether cloudy\, sunny or rainy (well\, not too rainy). Bring your creative thoughts!\nWe recommend having both a standard zoom lens and telephoto zoom lens\, preferably one that will go to 200mm or above.\nPlease note: There will be a good amount of walking on this Photo Walk. Nothing too treacherous\, but make sure to wear comfortable shoes!

SUMMARY:Hunt's Photo Adventure: Wild Horses in Utah
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Description \nJoin Hunt’s Photo Education for our annual adventure to photograph the Wild Horses of Utah! Join us as we search out and photograph one of the largest herds of wild horses in Utah!\nThis is a unique photography workshop right out of “The Old West”! Wild Horses have occupied this mountainous region of Utah since the late 1800’s. The herd is approximately 200 – 250 horses and is the largest herd of wild horses in the west. Mares and stallions average around 800 to 1000 pounds. The colors within the herd are brown\, bay\, paint\, sorrel\, roan\, buckskin\, black\, palomino\, and gray. The variety is endless due to the frequent breeding within the herd. There are many foal\, yearlings and colts that roam with the herd. The horses are in good condition and are frequently seen in the vicinity of the Pony Express Trail in the valley floor. On this workshop\, we will photograph the wild horses as well as other local scenes and wildlife.\nOn this workshop\, you will want to bring a variety of lenses\, from wide-angle to super-telephoto. The distance to your subjects can vary\, as the horses can be right next to you or far in the distance\, but it is certainly recommended to consider bringing a super-telephoto in the range of 500-600mm. Please keep in mind that you can always rent lenses from Hunt’s Rentals and at a decent cost! \nWe will maximize our time in the field shooting a multitude of subjects as well as incorporating classroom instruction\, critiques\, and photographic assignments each day. \nWhat’s included:\n• In-field photography and instruction\n• Ground transportation in the field\n• BLM photo workshop permits\n• Experienced workshop leaders\n• Image Discussion and Review Sessions \nWhat’s not included:\n• Air fare or baggage fees to and from Salt Lake City\, Utah\n• Cost of hotel (We will be staying at the Best Western in Tooele\, 435-882-5010)\n• Cost of food\n• Any activities outside the tour itinerary\n• Travel insurance (which is highly recommended for all travelers) \nSkill Sets: All Levels of Photographers are Welcome\nPhysical Activity: Medium to Moderate. Must be able to walk on uneven ground\, some short hikes to the horses and standing for extended periods. \nIn this workshop we will cover: \nExposure\nComposition\nMetering\nUse of Lenses\nSubject Development\nCreative Thinking\nShooting in Low Light\nLong Exposures\nUse of Filters (polarizers)\nImage Processing\nImage Review\nImage Critiquing \nLodging is not included in the cost of this Adventure. DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event is taken by the Wakefield Rec Department at this Link!\nWednesdays September 30th\, October 7th\, 14th\, 21st\, 28th & November 4th\, 4:30-6pm • Hunt’s Photo\, Melrose \nJoin Hunt’s Photo Education for a 6-session photography program aimed at strengthening their photographic skills while also learning a bit about how to take the best portraits.\n\nOver the course of the sessions\, we will cover a wide range of topics\, including portrait composition\, posing\, direction and interaction with the subject\, lighting (indoors and outside)\, editing and more! In every session we’ll have a brief introduction to a topic followed by a fun practical exercise. Our goal is to get your photographers taking pictures as much as possible! At the end of each session\, we’ll look back on the images to see what we liked about them.\nAs this is a class about portraits\, all attendees should be ready to have their picture taken! The best way to learn about how to pose and direct your subject is to be a subject yourself\, and that’s what these sessions aim to do. In the end\, attendees should have a better understanding of what makes a successful portrait\, how to execute it\, and also have some great shots of themselves! \nPrerequisites: \n–Attendees should have a little bit of experience with their cameras. They do not need to be experts\, but this shouldn’t be the first time using their camera. We also offer our Intro to Photography program if you are just starting out. \n-This course is geared towards students aged 11-16 years old. Our age requirement is general and a certain maturity level is helpful.  Younger students with interest and a level of responsibility are welcome to attend. \n-Students will be required to have some kind of camera.
