It’s important to fully understand the why and how of your camera settings.\nIn this outdoor\, hands-on class\, you’ll learn all about the basics of photography. We will discuss Exposure (how light works with the camera)\, the Big Three Settings (Aperture\, Shutter Speed\, & ISO)\, how they affect your picture and how to set them\, and what mode to set it to on your camera! We’ll discuss changing depth-of-field (controlling what?s in focus in the background)\, stopping or blurring the action in your scene\, and many other basic picture-taking techniques. This will be an excellent opportunity to learn about your camera in a fun and safe environment! Join us to strengthen your photographic knowledge!\nIn this session of Beginner Photography in the Field…\n…we will be going to Dorrs Pond in Manchester\, New Hampshire. Dorrs Pond is a recreational area with a gorgeous nature trail that leads around the pond with lots of birds! For this reason\, we often start newcomers off using the “Priority Modes” (Ex. Aperture Priority) because it’s “easier”. In reality\, these priority modes are just one solution. For some photographers\, there is only the manual mode. But why is it important to shoot in the Manual mode? Are there reasons to use manual vs. Aperture priority and vice-versa? How can we maximize usability?\nIn this class\, we will cover:\n• Your Camera’s Light Meter and how it works\n• Use of Aperture Priority vs. Manual modes\n• Histograms\n• Photographing in RAW vs. Jpeg\nUnderstanding the full-functionality of your camera is a necessity to improving your flexibility when photographing in a variety of situations. This course is designed to help you feel more comfortable about how to change your camera’s settings in those situations. It is recommended as a follow-up to our Beginner Photography course.

SUMMARY:Hunt's Portrait Workshop: Media Day and Action Sports Portraits
DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Photo Education for another entry in our series of portrait workshops where we will be creating dynamic lighting scenarios involving athletes\, recreating Media Day! Media Day portraits have become increasingly popular in the sporting world\, from the start of the sporting season to major sporting events and more. Media Day photos are used for promotional imagery to showcase the aura of the athlete. Media Day is essential in almost every high school and college. \nIn this workshop\, we will be posing athletes and creating lighting scenarios that all photographers can use as part of their arsenal when creating Media Day portraits. This is an excellent portfolio-building workshop!  We will work both indoors and outside. For indoors\, we will emphasize the use LED lighting\, including Nanlite and Aputure lighting\, as well as other elements that help build the atmosphere of your images! For outdoors\, we will use a combination of natural light and strobes to create the ultimate outdoor look! \nThis workshop will be co-taught by Hunt’s Photo Educator Paul Nelson and professional photographer Henry Marte. Both have extensive portrait experience and will take you through the full process of lighting a subject\, how to properly expose while using strobes\, and how to actually use the strobes themselves! \nPhotographers of all skill levels are encouraged to attend. \nAbout Henry Marte\nHenry is a published photographer and credited filmmaker. He specializes in various forms of photography\, including portrait\, events\, headshots\, drone\, and commercial photography. Other than attending MassArt’s Documentary Film School\, he is almost entirely self taught. He runs a small media production studio called Marte Media\, based out of Western Avenue Studios in Lowell. Some of his clients include Spartan Race\, UMass Lowell\, Phillips Academy\, Navigation Brewing Company\, and more. Originally from NYC\, he now calls Lowell\, Massachusetts his home. He enjoys New York style pizza\, walks with a camera\, and hiking to active volcanoes.

DESCRIPTION:Photography has the power to freeze time\, to capture the world and reality. In most people’s mind photography has to be truthful to reality. It has to depict a scene\, and atmosphere\, and event accurately. But photography is so much more than a simple tool to document our lives…\nIt is also a way to express ourselves\, our point of view\, to share our messages. Photography is art. Photography can be abstract and minimalist. It allows us to change what we see based on our emotions and intent.\nLong exposure is a technique that embraces this approach: it transforms reality into something else\, into a dialogue between the artist\, the subject and viewer. By stretching the time used to capture a single image\, the photographer includes movement in their art: water becomes smooth\, clouds create long silky streaks\, trees blur out in the wind… the effects are endless. Long exposure is a different mindset. One that comes from within and uses what is out there in order to produce unique and breathtaking images. Images that go beyond documenting and bridge into the Fine Arts.\nIn this technical lecture\, Thibault Roland will introduce long exposure and will discuss the equipment needed to shoot with this technique. At the end of the presentation\, you will have a checklist of the different steps to follow as well as tips and tricks that will help you take breathtaking images using this unique approach. \n  \nAbout Thibault: Born in France in 1981\, Sony Artisan of Imagery Thibault Roland is a scientist by training and fine art photographer. Thanks to his rigorous background he became a Master of techniques such as long exposure\, tilt/shift and infrared photography. He specializes in black and white architecture\, minimalism and seascapes. His fine art photographs have been shown\, published and awarded internationally and are included in public and private collections such as at the Boston Athenaeum. Previously an instructor at the New England School of Photography\, Thibault teaches workshops and gives seminars internationally. SUMMARY:Hunt's Photo Walk: Canterbury Shaker Village
DESCRIPTION:Join Hunt’s Photo Education for a photo walk at the historic Canterbury Shaker Village.\nShakers were a religious group formed in England in the 1700s from a variety of religions\, including English Quakers and Methodists. (Shakers were named based on their ecstatic dance\, initially known as “Shaking Quakers”.) Shaker communities sprouted throughout Northeastern Colonial America\, eventually heading westward. Due to the celibate nature of the communities\, the Shaker communities dwindled into the 20th century\, including the Canterbury Shaker Village\, whose last surviving members died in the early 1990s. Founded in 1965\, the Canterbury Shaker Village preserves the heritage of the Canterbury Shaker Community from the past two centuries. The settlement is complete with original Shaker buildings\, as well as the surrounding area of forests\, fields\, gardens\, nature trails\, and mill ponds.\nOn this walk\, we will photograph the outside buildings of this historic sect’s wholly simple (and simply holy) lives. We will attempt to tell the story of the Shakers through what they left behind. This will include an emphasis on Composition and discussing Black & White\, architecture\, and close-up photography. Come photograph a fascinating historical lifestyle! Photographers of all skill levels are encouraged to attend!

DESCRIPTION:Hunt’s Photo Education Presents…The Weekend Workshops: A long weekend featuring education seminars\, photo walks and workshops\, image reviews\, editing\, and fine art printing\, all in glorious black and white. \nDuring the weekend\, each attendee will have the opportunity to attend four Photo Walks/Workshops. We will have an introductory meet and greet and presentation on the first evening that will set the tone and expectations for the weekend\, as well as allow attendees to mingle with other attendees. On days 2 and 3\, our instructors will conduct one Photo Walk in the mid/late morning and one Photo Walk in the evening. They will repeat the same schedule on Friday and Saturday. (So\, if you attend a Photo Walk with Instructor A on Friday morning\, you’ll have the ability to attend a different Photo Walk with Instructor B on Saturday morning.)\nDuring the middle part of Friday and Saturday\, we will have image reviews\, image processing\, and have general photography discussions. You are welcome to attend these\, or you can take a break\, if needed! \nOn Day 4\, we will print and review selected images from all attendees. You are welcome to take these images with you after the workshop! \nThis year will be centered out of our Hunt’s Photo Melrose store location. DESCRIPTION:Autumn in Yellowstone National Park provides every photographer ample opportunity to capture images showcasing the breathtaking scenery\, inspiring nature\, and dramatic wildlife.  Photographers will be inspired by the autumn colors\, the drama of the seasonal rut\, a variety of wildlife\, and a diverse palette of nature scenes.  Each day\, based on weather\, light\, and activity\, we will explore the park for wildlife such as Elk\, Bears\, Bison\, and Great Grey Owls.  Landscape and nature opportunities will include the beauty of Lamar and Hayden Valleys\, geyser basins\, waterfalls\, autumn trees\, and historic rivers.  Yellowstone in autumn is not to be missed! \nItinerary \nOct 2 arrival to Bozeman.   We will have a group dinner to discuss plans for the week and discuss safety and protocol. Stay at Best Western in Bozeman\, MT. \nOct 3 – 7am start.  Attendees will meet in the lobby at 7am with bags and gear.  Our guide Adam Brubaker will drive us to West Yellowstone where we will stay for the week. SUMMARY:Hunt's Photo Adventure: Wild Horses in Utah
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Description \nJoin Hunt’s Photo Education for our annual adventure to photograph the Wild Horses of Utah! Join us as we search out and photograph one of the largest herds of wild horses in Utah!\nThis is a unique photography workshop right out of “The Old West”! Wild Horses have occupied this mountainous region of Utah since the late 1800’s. The herd is approximately 200 – 250 horses and is the largest herd of wild horses in the west. Mares and stallions average around 800 to 1000 pounds. The colors within the herd are brown\, bay\, paint\, sorrel\, roan\, buckskin\, black\, palomino\, and gray. The variety is endless due to the frequent breeding within the herd. There are many foal\, yearlings and colts that roam with the herd. The horses are in good condition and are frequently seen in the vicinity of the Pony Express Trail in the valley floor. On this workshop\, we will photograph the wild horses as well as other local scenes and wildlife.\nOn this workshop\, you will want to bring a variety of lenses\, from wide-angle to super-telephoto. The distance to your subjects can vary\, as the horses can be right next to you or far in the distance\, but it is certainly recommended to consider bringing a super-telephoto in the range of 500-600mm. SUMMARY:Hunt's Photo Adventure: Autumn in New Orleans & The Louisiana Bayou
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Description \nHunt’s Photo Adventure leaders Bob Fletcher and Jeff Swinger invite you to a unique Photo Adventure to New Orleans & the Louisiana Bayou. The trip will have a variety of subjects\, from street photography and architecture to wildlife and swampy landscapes!\nThe first two days we will be exploring New Orleans’s French Quarter\, Bourbon Street\, the Garden District\, and the Gothic above-ground cemetery that you have seen so often on television and in movies. You will be photographing architecture and street performers\, riding on a historic streetcar\, and enjoying the warm ambiance of New Orleans. \nThe rest of the days\, prepare yourself for an adventure through the swamps and bayous of Louisiana. You will embark on your journey in a custom-built vessel with a covered roof to keep you dry and cool. Tours are narrated by Capt. Billy Gaston\, who was born and raised in the Bayou. Toilet facilities are available on board the boat with special attention given to seniors and the physically challenged. \nThe cypress swamps of Louisiana are beautifully scenic\, but can be difficult to photograph without a boat to access most of the photogenic areas and an experienced guide to get you there. Photographing out of boats\, you will be shooting mostly handheld.  Wildlife like egrets\, herons\, turtles\, snakes\, owls\, and alligators can be common sightings in the swamp. You will want to bring a variety of focal lengths from wide angle to telephoto to get the most out of your trip. Early November to mid-December is the best time to be in the swamps. Wildlife is preparing for winter and is active and abundant. The cypress trees can take on a rusty appearance and fog can be common in the mornings. \n \nItinerary\nThis photography workshop begins in New Orleans\, where we’ll immerse ourselves in the energy and character of the French Quarter. From historic streets and iconic architecture to street performers and classic New Orleans flavors\, the city provides endless opportunities for storytelling and candid photography\, both day and night. We’ll explore at a relaxed pace\, focusing on capturing the spirit and visual rhythm of the Quarter. \n  \nMidway through the trip\, we head south to Morgan City and into the heart of Louisiana’s bayou country. Here\, the focus shifts to wildlife and landscape photography as we explore winding waterways by boat with a local Cajun guide. Cypress trees\, moss-draped swamps\, and native wildlife—including alligators and birdlife—create a completely different visual experience. Sunrise and afternoon sessions allow us to work in the best light\, with time built in for image review and post-processing discussions. One day includes a catered Southern Low Country shrimp boil lunch in the bayou\, paired with live local musicians for entertainment—an authentic Cajun experience between shooting sessions. Hotel reservations have been secured for the group in New Orleans and Morgan City\, LA. This essential information will be shared during the registration process once full payment for the workshop has been completed. After that\, please contact the hotels directly and provide them with your name and credit card details to finalize your room reservation. \nAbout Weather \nNovember brings comfortable temperatures in Louisiana\, with lows in the 50’s and highs in the mid-70s\, ideal for exploring and photographing outdoors.\nParticipants should use ONE (1) soft-sided rolling duffle for luggage and ONE (1) camera case.  Pack conservatively as the portage room is limited. \nPayments\nA non-refundable deposit of 25% is required upon registration to secure a spot. The remaining balance is due 60 days before the start of the workshop. We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance for any Hunt’s Photo Adventure in case you need to cancel.

SUMMARY:Hunt's Photo Adventure: On the Border Along the Mission Trail\, West Texas & White Sands National Park
DESCRIPTION:This is a two-part Photo Adventure designed to expose attendees to diverse creative opportunities featuring local culture and history as well as uniquely dramatic landscapes in Black and White. \nPart 1:  While visiting a few small villages near El Paso\, we will explore village features as well as old\, historic missions founded by Mexican settlers more than two centuries ago.  We will experience an annual festival celebrating the local patron saint\, Guadalupe.  During this festival\, we will photograph people\, dancers\, musicians\, architecture\, textures\, tones\, colors\, and more. \nPart 2: 90 minutes from El Paso\, Texas\, is White Sands National Park in Alamogordo\, New Mexico.  At White Sands\, huge dunes of gypsum\, ancient trees\, and yucca plants create a unique landscape perfectly suited for black and white photography.  We will spend two full days here utilizing light\, shadow\, and shape to advance our understanding and appreciation of the power and beauty of black and white photography.    Prior to the trip\, there will be an online presentation demonstrating the positive attributes of black and white photography. \nItinerary \nDec 9 – Arrive El Paso\, Texas \nDec 10 – 13th – photograph various elements of the annual Festival of Guadalupe along the Mission Trail through small villages and historic churches \nDec 13 – Depart late in the afternoon for White Sands National Park (90-minute drive) \nDec 14 – 15 – Explore White Sands National Park in Black and White (will include an online BW Presentation before the trip) \nDec 16 – Early departure for El Paso and Airport \n  \nWhat’s included:\n•In-field instruction at each location\n•Image Discussion and Review \n•All National Park Fees \nWhat’s not included:\n•Transportation to and from El Paso/Alamogordo\n•Cost of meals\n•Cost of hotels (El Paso – Best Western Airport Entrada\, 2001 Airway Blvd\, El Paso\, TX 79925 • (915) 772-3650; Alamogordo – Fairfield Inn\, 300 Panorama Blvd\, Alamogordo\, NM 88310 • (575) 437-4000) \nSkill Sets: All Levels of Photographers are Welcome\nPhysical Activity: Low.
