About the Nifty Fifty Workshops
Every photographer at one point or another has the internal struggle before going to photograph: What lenses should I bring with me today? The common answer is as many as I can without being too uncomfortable. And so we pack up our wide, standard, telephoto, prime, and macro lenses and head out into the field, forcing ourselves to endure limitless choices while sacrificing simplicity.
Our Nifty Fifty workshops flip the script and force you to only carry one lens: A 50mm lens, nostalgically referred to as a “nifty fifty”. With limitations, what can you– the photographer, the creator, the artist– achieve?

Walk Description
For this workshop, we will be photographing in one of Boston’s most notable neighborhoods, and its oldest: The North End. This walk will emphasize telling a story through composition as we workshop street and candid photography! We will discuss managing ISO and shutter speed in low-light conditions to never miss a shot, as well as the art of blending in and going unnoticed. (And no tripods!) We will also try to get it all right in camera! While you are welcome to shoot in RAW, we’ll also discuss the joy of shooting for the end result in JPEG!

Our mission is to use a small handful of our images from the day to capture the essence of the North End neighborhood.

Join us for a fun workshop!

*Question: Are other prime lenses acceptable? Olympus/Panasonic users may use a 25mm lens, since it gives the same look as a 50mm and other primes can be used as an alternative, but we ask that you try to keep it at one prime in as close to that range as possible. Remember- this is a “nifty fifty” workshop, not a “mighty ninety” workshop. (And does that even really rhyme?)
