Demons live in the shadow, not the light — your key is what you take away, not what you add. Push into low-key territory: hard, directional sources (a Fresnel snooted tight, or a light raked at a brutal angle) carving the face out of near-total black. Let split lighting cut a subject in half, one side devoured entirely by darkness. Underexpose the background until it disappears. The tension comes from concealment — a jawline suggested rather than shown, an eye lit while the rest of the face surrenders to shadow. This is chiaroscuro at its most aggressive: contrast so steep it borders on violence, an image that feels like something is being hidden from the viewer rather than revealed to them.
Photographer and Educator Bobbi Lane will discuss how to master “photographing demons” using classic techniques and modern lighting, using Fuji cameras and Nanlite lighting.
